The students and instructors who make up the BATC VEX Robotics team were invited to showcase their skills on Good Things Utah and KSL's The Browser today. First, in all their glory, the BATC team who earned the title of 'National Champions' met head-to-head with Davis High School, World Champions, in a segment all about Robotics. It was fun to see these bright students show off their hard work and abilities. Next, we meet teammates Jeff and Nate Merrill up close as they give away their secret (well, it was a secret) winning strategy. Congratulations to the two teams and we wish you luck in future competitions!

BATC Fashion Merchandising students present their annual Spring Fashion Show. “Artistic Impression” will be the theme for the fashion show. The show will be held on April 16th and 17th, 7:30 p.m. at Bridgerland Applied Technology College, 1301 North 600 West. Tickets for the show are $5 and will be available in advance at the BATC bookstore or on the nights of the show at the door. Refreshments will be served.

Do you want to know why we LOVE working at BATC? We get to see, and hear, amazing stories of students receiving great jobs and accomplishing incredible things! These are a few of our recent favorites:

• From the community: “I sent a client to BATC last summer who was struggling with a divorce. The only job she could find with insurance benefits was a lunch-lady position with the school district; however, it only paid minimum wage and lasted nine months out of the year. As you could imagine, things were a little tight for her and her children. She asked if I thought she could qualify for grants, in order to attend USU and pursue a four year degree. I suggested she consider one of your certificate programs, in order to complete in a shorter amount of time that also complied with her financial situation. Three months and $350 later she passed the CNA program and found a job where she made an extra $10,000 last year. She has now been offered a full-time position with benefits that will nearly double her income. Your program and staff really helped her to gain her confidence and dignity back. BATC has the power and ability to change people's lives.”

Dr. Richard L. Maughan, President of Bridgerland Applied Technology College (BATC) for more than 40 years, announced Friday, March 13, 2015, that his tenure at the helm of BATC, one of the most successful and innovative Applied Technology Colleges (ATC’s) in the state and across the country, will come to a close with his retirement, effective June 30, 2015.

Our Automated Manufacturing & Robotics program qualified all three of their robots for state this year at the State VEX Tournament held at Utah State this weekend.

Teams 185A and 185D also worked together and won the entire tournament! This means they have qualified for the National and World tournaments!

"A survey released by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) shows more than 85 percent of contractors in Utah expect to have difficulties in finding and hiring new building professionals. U.S. contractors' foremost challenge "is the growing shortage of qualified workers — especially craft workers — to fill available positions," said Stephen Sandherr, AGC's chief executive."

BATC honored nine students who participated in their Fire Recruit Candidate Academy last Thursday.  The academy is a five-month program that teaches Firefighter I and II, along with Hazmat Awareness and Operations.  The students pride themselves as they endure many hours of training to successfully complete the requirements.

Bridgerland Applied Technology College RCA is one of two locations in the state that offers firefighter training in this format.  It's a pathway that not only prepares someone who wants to be a career firefighter, but takes them way beyond what is required to obtain firefighter certification.

It’s a new year and you think, “Uggh, new year resolutions are so overrated.” Statistically, people just don’t keep their resolutions, actually, only 8 percent do! So, this year, we encourage you not to make your average resolution, but look deep within yourself and find your passion. This means, you not only set goals, but make this passion a part of your everyday life. Do something every day to be successful in what you choose to do. We all experience the ebb and flow of struggle and growth, just make sure you come out on top!

Graduation was held Thursday, December 11, with over 200 students being recognized. Mindi Ward from the Practical Nursing Program shared the story of her journey to Bridgerland and what she gained along the way. Mindi was also selected to represent BATC as the Student of the Year! Kudos to Nathan Merrill, team captain for BATC’s Skunkworks Robotics Team. Nathan not only took the initiative to go after, but was awarded a $2,300 grant, which will allow two robot teams to participate in either the national or world competitions in March 2015. We look for great things from these bright, industrious, creative leaders of tomorrow. Great job!

Mindi Ward, Practical Nursing student, was awarded the BATC Student of the Year for 2014 on December 4. UCAT President Robert Brems and BATC Campus President Dr. Richard Maughan congratulated Mindi on a job well done and presented her with a $1,000 check donated by Zion's Bank. We are so proud of Mindi and her accomplishments and can't wait to hear her speak at the upcoming graduation.

The outpour of support was greatly appreciated and we hope your generosity sparked the beginning of a wonderful holiday season full of giving! Chantel Guinn and Mindy Anderson, Business students at the Brigham City Campus, collected over 820 articles of warm clothing during their two-week humanitarian project:

300+ Warm Clothing articles (Hats, Gloves, Sweatshirts, etc.)

On Friday, November 21, there were 24 cadets who graduated from the Police Academy Program with several hundred attendees, which included police administrators, deputies, and officers from Box Elder, Cache, and Weber counties. We enjoyed the guest speaker, Sidney Groll, Director of Law Enforcement for the Department of Natural Resources, and presentation by the graduates. Eight instructors were recognized for going above and beyond in their teaching capacity.

The BATC Fashion Merchandising Department just finished their annual Fall Fashion Show.  With record breaking attendance for show history at BATC, and an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from the community, models, and students, the show was a complete success!  The theme for the show was, “Legends of the Fall”.  The students enrolled in the Fashion Merchandising classes were responsible for coordinating the clothing, choreography, music, advertising, and all other elements of the show, which featured clothing from retailers in the Cache Valley Mall, DownEast, and Old Navy.

During the month of November, the Business Technology Department is excited to be collecting donations of new stuffed animals. The collections will be donated to the North Logan Fire Department. The firemen will give the stuffed animals to children who are victims of domestic violence or whose lives have been changed due to emergency situations. Please donate a new stuffed animal in one of the red boxes distributed throughout the Main Campus, West Campus, or Brigham City Campus by November 21.
