A veterinarian assistant/pre-vet technician is a professional who acts as support staff for the veterinarian and others while helping animals in need. Range of duties include animal restraint, nursing care, radiology, routine lab procedures, blood collection, catheterization, dental cleanings, administration of vaccines, physical exams, client services, front office duties, general cleaning of exam rooms and kennels, CPR/First Aid, etc. This program will prepare students to work at veterinary clinics or to seek further education in the veterinary field.

Special Requirements:

High school diploma or GED prior to admission, CPR fee (varies; adult students only), non-refundable $50 background check fee, must be 18 years or older to submit to the background check to enter the adult program. Employment Outlook

Recent surveys of local veterinary clinics indicate a need for well-trained veterinarian assistants who have had significant supervised clinical experience. The employment outlook for veterinary assistant/pre-vet technicians is expected to grow 14 percent (about as fast as average) through 2020 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Job openings will stem from an increase of pet owners who are willing to pay for advanced care for pets they consider to be part of their family.
