Description

Start your new career by developing skills, competencies, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to assist the dentist at chairside, and maintain and manage the dental office and reception area. Students learn to chart; pass instruments; position patients; expose, process, and mount radiographs; pour models; mix dental materials; and assist with general dental procedures.

In addition to attending class and labs, students spend several hours in a dental office where they have the opportunity to practice the skills they have learned. Upon completion, students will be prepared for immediate employment!

Start working in the lab on the second day of class!

Infection control is a priority consideration in dental practice. With the increasing publicity surrounding hepatitis, herpes, and AIDS, dentists, dental health care workers, and consumers are becoming more aware that the dental environment is a potential source for one or more of these diseases. The prevention of cross contamination and transmission of infection to all persons, whether patients, dentists, dental health care workers, or nonclinical staff is the professional responsibility of all dental personnel. A fundamental principle of an effective infection control program is to exercise care, precautions, and effective control techniques. To achieve this goal, BATC Dental Assisting has adopted policies and procedures that represent a comprehensive and practical infection control program. In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) and in an effort to minimize risk to students and staff, each student accepted into the program must have documentation of current immunizations/vaccinations for tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, tuberculosis, and Hepatitis B. Immunizations/vaccinations may be waived with documentation of acceptable titer or written documentation from a physician of immunization risk.

Please note: A composite ACT score of 17 or a composite SAT score of 1210 can waive assessment requirements if taken no more than four years prior to enrollment.

This program requires a non-refundable $50 background check fee. Dental students are required to provide proof of and maintain a current CPR/Basic Life Support Card. Please see the current class schedule for the BATC Healthcare Provider (CPR) course.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, dental assisting jobs are growing faster than average. Population growth, greater retention of natural teeth by middle-aged and older people, and an increased focus on preventative dental care for younger generations will fuel demand for dental services.
