Cosmetology - Nail Technician

Nail technicians work exclusively on nails and provide manicures, pedicures, acrylic nails & fills, nail wraps and gel nails to clients. Nail technicians usually work in clean, pleasant surroundings with good lighting and ventilation. Good health and stamina are important; prolonged exposure to some nail chemicals may cause irritation, so protective clothing, such as plastic gloves or aprons, may be worn. Students will learn the why and how of the many services they will perform, which will give the students the experience and confidence to succeed!

The State of Utah requires a theory and practical exam for licensure. Students completing both the BATC nail technician competencies and 300 hours of training will be qualified to take the exams.

Individuals seeking the Nail Technician Instructor certificate must have both a Nail Technician license and departmental approval prior to enrollment.

Cosmetology Application Procedure for Instructor Training Certificates:

Candidates interested in the Cosmetology Instructor certificates will be considered for entry after completion/graduation from Cosmetology, Esthetics or Nail technician, after six months verified employment in a salon/spa and after the submission of a resume that includes three letters of recommendation: one employer recommend, one academic recommend from their Cosmetology or Esthetics or Nail technician instructor, and one character recommendation.

Candidate must also submit a copy of their current Cosmetology, Esthetics or Nail Technician license – current license must represent the instructor training that candidate is interested in for enrollment. After all items have been submitted, the candidate will be scheduled for a committee interview. The committee will be comprised of not less than three department instructors and two other individuals from either the private sector or from other departments at BATC. Candidates who score 90 percent or better will be given a start date. Candidates who start the instructor training certificate(s) will sign an agreement contract that will specify expectations.

Outcome statistics are compiled annually based upon Training Outcome surveys conducted with students post-graduation. Data is gathered through coordination with the student, faculty, Student Services Office personnel, and licensing agencies.


Employment Outlook

In recent years there has been increasing interest from the public in the care, health, and attractiveness of skin and nails. Continuing growth in the number of nail salons and full-service day spas will generate numerous job openings for manicurists, pedicurists, and skin care specialists. Nail salons typically specialize in providing manicures and pedicures. Day spas provide a full range of services, including beauty wraps, manicures and pedicures, facials, and massages.
