Royal Hafen has always had a passion for aerodynamics. Finding him wrapped up in the study of airplane wings or sailboat hulls was always common. It is no surprise that he has chosen a career path in composites.

After earning a degree in drafting, Royal jumped on the chance to further his education by attending the Advanced Composite & Fabrication evening courses at BATC. Almost immediately, a whole new world opened up to him! While on a field trip with his Composites class, Royal visited ENVE Composites where he spoke to them about his drafting experience and employment goals.  Even though he was, at the time, a beginner student in the Composites course, the company recognized that he would be a valuable asset to them. Royal was hired by ENVE when he completed the Composites training and now he also shares his enthusiasm for education by teaching classes at BATC. Thanks to Utah State University, BATC shares a state-of-the art composites lab at the Brigham City Campus.

Why Composites?

Composites are unique engineering materials, unlike traditional materials of wood, metal, or plastics. A composite is a material made from two or more materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties that, when combined, produce a new material with characteristics different from the original components.

Right now, employers are looking to hire people with the hands-on composites training and experience that BATC offers. There are more than 40 different composite manufacturers in northern Utah alone, all of which are creating materials to build everything from bullet-proof vests to treadmills, and spaceship wings to sailboats. Companies from ski manufacturers to skateboard designers and guitar makers are actively searching for ways to improve their products and discovering that customized composites are the way to go. BATC’s job placement is at 100% for entry-level jobs with a basic certificate starting at $15-17/hr. Now is the time to consider jumpstarting your career with a certificate in Composites!
